Nowadays with the fast-paced and highly demanding lives that most people lead, it is no wonder why most they feel a great deal of stress and fall sick most of the time. Stress is a condition that is experienced by everyone at one point in their lives. Feeling stressed is the body’s defense mechanism toward an actual or perceived threat or difficulty in life. Once this happens, it can lead to a disruption in the overall balance of one’s psychosomatic system.

The perception of stress is highly individualized. This is the main reason why different people react in a distinct way towards an adverse situation. For instance, your friend may find it very thrilling and exciting to ride a roller coaster. You, on the other hand, is sweating and constantly praying for the ride to end. Indeed, there are times when it is not the external events that are stressful, simply your perception makes them seem that way.

Why is stress management really crucial to one’s health? The main reason for this is to keep your sanity in check, due to the myriad of negative effects caused by stress that is not dealt with properly, or ignored incessantly. Stress can take a toll on your mental, physical, and emotional health. Initially, the effects of stress on the body can be somewhat restrained, but over time, they can be fatal. Some of these are the following: sudden surge of blood sugar, blood pressure, and heart rate—all of which are needed by the body to confront or avoid an impending danger (fight or flight response).

Moreover, there are a number of complications that are caused by chronic stress. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, stress is linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide.

The multitude of negative effects of stress can be best explained by the hormonal changes that occur when one faces a stressful situation. Each person has a stress system in the body which is generally responsible for coordinating all the chemical and physiological processes that occurs as a response to stress by releasing hormones.

However, there is more to the system than just that. The hormones circulating in the body are very much regulated to affect our other body. For instance, stress alters a person’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for the regulation of sleep, mood, and one’s wellbeing, in general. Once the normal levels of serotonin are disrupted due to stress, there are reduced feelings of pleasure which ultimately leads to a poor quality of life.

Despite stress sounding scary, a good amount of stress is beneficial in the sense that it primes the body to be ready for any adverse situation. Thus, it is best to manage stress to keep one motivated and self-driven rather than overwhelmed, worried, and anxious. When one is in tip top shape mentally, he/she will be as fit as a fiddle too.

Being under a high level of stress can be detrimental to one’s health. Various negative effects of stress have long been recorded, from heart disease to immune system breakdown. And since stress is an inevitable part of life, the only thing that can be done is to know how to deal with it.
There are many ways by which one can manage stress. It can be as simple as doing breathing exercises, having a good diet, avoiding stimulants like nicotine and caffeine, taking time out to relax, having a support system, and many more. All of these are meant to help us ease our daily stress that comes from work, our environment or even family and friends.

Stress management can yield the following benefits, among others:

1. Health Improvement. A good amount of stress is beneficial. However, when it is in excess, you will begin to feel the negative vibes. You will be surprised that a simple stressful situation, if not properly dealt with, can blow up and cause you to experience minor things like upset stomach or headaches. Even more serious illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, and lung ailments may occur.

2. Increased Productivity. Of course, when you are not stressed, you are more likely to perform and function well. Stress management teaches you to reduce stress through relaxing your mind and thinking positive. Optimism is one way that you can stay more focused and you learn how to respond and handle failures and demands at work and use them as motivation to improve your performance.

3. Higher Self-Esteem & Improved Self-Image. One of the key components of stress management is exercise. Work out the stress in your body and let your muscles be relieved of their tensions. Through exercise, you achieve a healthier, fit, and toned body. You will feel more confident because you know you are in good shape. Also, when you get enough sleep, you do not look groggy and sluggish. You feel more refreshed and renewed, and you’ll get the strength to start your day refreshed and combat any more stress giving issues.

Indeed, the positive effects of stress management will definitely help in your daily life. However, stress management is not without its limitations. This is mainly because most stress-reduction approaches like exercise, fitness programs, nutritional education, and time management tips do not specifically provide a way for a person to reduce or eliminate stress in the moment.

This can be explained by the fact that perception of stress is highly individualized. This means that people will feel stressed out by certain events only if they allow themselves to be. The problem with stress management is that the approaches used do not directly target the real source of people’s frustrations. Thus, people convert these to unpleasant behavior instead, indirectly creates stress towards his/her family or friends. The best way to deal with stress is to go down to the root of the problem and take it out. Without that stressful issue, you will not no reason to feel stressed anymore.
